San Francisco, CA – April 20, 2015 – Cantaloupe Systems, the vending industry’s premier provider of cloud-based, mobile technologies that deliver an integrated end-to-end vending solution, announced today that Mitch Lowe, co-founder of Netflix and former Redbox COO and president, has joined its Board of Directors, effective immediately. Mr. Lowe has a diverse background and wide-ranging expertise, and will assist the Company with various aspects, including strategy development and implementation, new markets exploration and strategic alliances.
“Mitch launched the first kiosk VHS vending machine in 1984 and has been an innovative leader in the home entertainment and tech industries since the early 80s,” said Mandeep Arora, CEO and President at Cantaloupe Systems. “His deep knowledge of penetrating new markets and unattended retail is perfectly aligned with our mission. We are thrilled to have him on our team.”
After starting Video Droid and spending years crafting websites for video stores, Mr. Lowe was asked to help in the formation of Netflix in partnership with Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings. He served as vice president of business development and strategic alliances for Netflix from 1998 to 2003 departing just after the IPO to join a small team from McDonald's to form what became Redbox DVD Rental Kiosks, a subsidiary of Outerwall. At Redbox, Mr. Lowe began as chief operating officer, becoming president in early 2009, and playing a pivotal role in scaling Redbox from a handful of rental kiosks to nearly $1.5 billion in annual revenue. Since leaving Redbox in late 2011, he has served as an independent consultant for entrepreneurs and startups.
“Cantaloupe Systems is an undisputed leader in vending technology. They’ve been at the forefront of innovation in an antiquated market for years – they were first to market in telemetry, first in cellular and mobile devices, first in cloud, first in real-time pre-kitting and first in dynamic scheduling,” commented Mr. Lowe. “I’m excited to be a strategic advisor as they explore applying their smarter vending technologies to new markets, and continue to improve and modernize the vending industry from a technology perspective.”
