Miami, FL December 22, 2014 Blint Shakes, (www.blintshakes.com), the developers of the world’s first automated kiosk that dispenses freshly blended protein shakes, announced that they are strongly in favor of recent FDA rules that requires owners of vending machines to place nutritional information for each product sold in a highly visible location.
As reported in the New York Times, the new rules that will require the posting of calorie counts on vending machines. “Health experts said the new requirements would help combat the country’s obesity epidemic by showing Americans just how many calories lurk in their favorite foods,” the Times stated.
“This is one of the most important public health nutrition policies ever to be passed nationally,” said Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. “Right now, you are totally guessing at what you are getting. This rule will change that.”
However, the new rules were not universally welcomed. “Vending machine owners lobbied to be excluded from the regulations, as did the convenience and grocery store associations,” the Times reported.
Blint Shakes Company Founder and CEO, Oscar Perez, opposed the lobbying effort, and stated that his company is strongly in favor of the new nutritional labeling regulations. “We were founded on the principle of providing high quality, nutritious items to people in out-of-home environments,” he said. “We developed our recipes so that all people – especially those in areas that are underserved areas – can get healthy, nutritious meal replacement or meal enhancement protein shakes, quickly and affordably,” he added. “It is counter-productive for the vending industry to challenge rules that help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. We believe in transparency in labeling, and providing high quality, healthy items to consumers in a convenient manner.”
Blint Shakes is in the early stages of rolling out their automated protein drink centers in health clubs, youth centers, airports and hospitals nationwide.
