Baltimore City Council Backs Plan To Raise City’s Minimum Wage To $15 Per Hour

Aug. 9, 2016

The Baltimore City Council voted 7-4 to back a plan that would steadily raise the city’s minimum wage to $15 per hour through 2022, The Baltimore Sun reports. A final vote is expected on Aug. 15; however, to pass it would need the support of at least eight of the 15 council members.

The state’s current minimum wage is $8.75. The source reports that employers in Baltimore are currently required to pay the state minimum wage, which will increase to $10.10 by 2018.

The proposed bill would call for the wage to increase to $9.50 per hour next July and increasing until it reaches $13.50 in 2021 and $15 per hour in 2022.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake indicated she would sign the legislation.
