After it won legislative approval to take over vending machine food inspections, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has asked local environmental health officers to continue doing the work because it can’t, according to The Daily Reporter.
MDARD had previously lobbied to take over the inspections after vending companies complained to lawmakers about differing fees and inspections in each district. MDARD admitted that most machines on site would be inspected only every three years, with some being inspected on a five year cycle, the source reports.
The overwhelming reaction has been to deny the request, according to Paul Andriaachi, Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Counties Community Health Agency Environmental Director.
