Expect coffee prices to rise, and one reason is durian

Depleted stockpiles, a freak frost in Brazil and drought have all contributed to high coffee prices. Increased demand for "the world's smelliest fruit" is also to blame.

Durian -- a fruit so smelly it is banned on public transport in countries such as Thailand, Japan and Hong Kong -- is in high demand in China. That high demand, paired with the high prices that go with the durian crop, has convinced many Vietnamese farmers to swap their coffee fields for durian, particularly as a continuing drought in Vietnam affects growing conditions for Robusta beans.
