Gaviña Renews Commitment To Sustainability With Direct Impact
Source Gaviña
Gaviña recently shared it's continued commitment to sustainability. The message was as follows.
At Gaviña, we are committed to provide premium coffee with a “greener” coffee footprint. Through our Direct Impact™ initiative, we are making positive changes in every business decision we make so that we can preserve natural resources and our environment for future generations. Our sustainability commitment focuses on four core pillars: Dedication to Farmers, Sustainable Sourcing, Environmental Sustainability, and Social Stewardship.
Dedication To Farmers
We launched our international outreach program in 2003 to improve the livelihood of small coffee farmers at origin and better adapt to climate changes by implementing community and educational infrastructure, encouraging gender equality, and empowering youth to be part of coffee farming solutions. Our current projects include:
- Building a coffee wet mill that will directly benefit over 600 farmers in Andes, Colombia (2015-2020). Our goal is to improve coffee quality and quantity processed 30%, reduce water contamination 90%, and increase time farmers spend with family 20%.
- Providing sustainable farming, technical assistance and educational resources that will benefit 100 farmers and youth in Villa Canales, Guatemala (2014-2018). Our goal is to promote a sustainable future for coffee producers by improving household income by 15% and inspire young people to innovate farming solutions for their communities.
Between 2003 and 2013, our community and educational projects in coffee growing communities include:
- Implementation of on-line education centers in San Carlos and Talnique, El Salvador.
- Development of remote learning facilities in San Juan Lachao and Santa Lucia Teotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. • Renovation of elementary schools in Estelí and Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua.
Sustainable Sourcing
We are dedicated to ensure a long term supply of sustainable coffee. We work with partners to procure sustainably grown and ethically traded coffee and offer our customers premium coffee that is certified as UTZ, Rainforest Alliance, Fair Trade USA, or USDA Organic.
Environmental Sustainability
As part of our corporate sustainability stewardship, we focus on six core areas to continually improve our operational efficiencies and minimize the environmental impact of our business: Energy, Water, Waste, Transportation, Pollution Prevention, and Climate Protection.
Social Stewardship
Respecting people and giving back to the community is the cornerstone of our family tradition. We are proud to support EnrichLA (shown left) as they introduce children in our local community to the joys of growing and harvesting their own food. Annually, we support over 200 charities and organizations globally and locally to increase community access to health care and educational programs, and encourage young people to be future leaders in sustainability.
