There is a movement to rebuild Puerto Rico’s coffee industry, especially the growth of specialty coffee. According to NPR, Puerto Rico’s coffee crop is only a fraction of what it was a century ago, and little of the crop is exported. However, that’s changing. NPR reports that the island’s agriculture department is using incentives to boost production including paying for equipment and farm labor. Part of the movement includes educating farmers and consumers to recognize the qualities of a good cup of coffee.
Last year coffee production increased in Puerto Rico and the island produced around 10 million pounds of coffee.
