Uglies Kettle Chips will turn even more “uglies” into sweet with the launch of two new sweet potato chip flavors.
The brand uses imperfect potatoes, those that would be otherwise discarded as food waste, as the basis for its Uglies brand products. The brand’s mission is “to reduce waste, support farmers, and fight hunger by using imperfect potatoes.” According to Uglies, 26% of U.S. produce gets discarded for cosmetic reasons.
The new Hot Honey and Spicy BBQ flavors are part of the company's Sweets offerings, kettle chips made with sweet potatoes. According to category research provided by Uglies, more than 50% of American consumers have tried snacks with sweet potatoes and liked them, and an additional 16% are interested in trying them. The research also notes that sales of sweet potato chips are up 130% in the last four years.
Uglies Kettle Chips are the only kettle chips that are Upcycled Certified by the Upcycled Food Association. The brand recently celebrated a significant milestone, reaching 30 million pounds of "ugly potatoes" that have been rescued from food waste since its inception in 2017.
Uglies, a division of Dieffenbach's Potato Chips Inc., also donates a portion of its profits to charity in support of its mission.
