GMO Labeling Bill Advances In The Senate

July 7, 2016

A federal bill that would require food manufacturers to label foods that have genetically engineered ingredients has advanced in the Senate, according to The New York Times. The bill moved forward in a 65-32 procedural vote and is expected to get final approval in the Senate.

The bill would also apply to growers of fruit and vegetables that are genetically engineered.

It is not clear whether the House will favor the bill or if President Obama would sign it. The Department of Agriculture would be responsible for administering the GMO labeling program under the Senate bill.
