Mark Farrell, a politician serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, will introduce legislation that would ban sugary and fatty items from vending machines on city property, according to SFGate. Farrell’s legislation would require all prepackaged food sold through the approximately 150 vending machines on city property to contain less than 200 calories per serving and have no more than 240 milligrams of sodium per serving, among other requirements.
A vending operator interviewed for the article told the source that the passage of the legislation would “probably cut into his sales,” as consumers will then likely get what they are looking for at another location.
The legislation, written with the help of the American Heart Association, would apply to new and renewed contracts.
