Watchdog Group Claims Vending Machines Aren’t Offering Enough Healthy Items

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) released a national study of 853 vending machines on 260 state and local public properties. CSPI claims that 58 percent of the vending machines offered soda or other sugar-sweetened beverages and 32 percent of snacks were candy, followed by chips at 24 percent. A CSPI nutrition policy associate is quoted as saying implementing nutrition restrictions for vending machines on public property that would require more “healthy” items is a common-sense, low cost strategy to fight obesity and other chronic diseases. Full article
