General Mills Targeted In ‘100% Natural’ Lawsuit

Aug. 29, 2016

Lawsuits filed on behalf of the Organic Consumers Association and advocacy groups Moms across America and Beyond Pesticides allege that General Mills misrepresented the oats used in selected Nature Valley bars as ‘100% natural’ because they contain trace levels of pesticide residue, reports BakeryAndSnacks.

They argue that consumers would not expect to see pesticide residue at any level in products that stated they were “Made with 100% NATURAL whole grain OATS.” The plaintiff in the lawsuit argues: These claims are false, deceptive, and misleading. The oat products at issue are not “made with 100% Natural whole grain oats,” but instead the oats contain the chemical glyphosate, a potent biocide and human endocrine disruptor, with detrimental health effects that are still becoming known.

The source speculates that defense attorney’s will likely move for dismissal as the FDA is investigating the meaning of “natural” claims in addition to other arguments.
