New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg wants to reduce obesity and diabetes by banning the use of food stamps to buy "sugar-sweetened beverages" in New York City, according to The New York Times.
Editor's Insight: This proposal is not only unfair in that it limits choices to (and stigmatizes) food stamp recipients. It also creates a logistical problem for retailers. The retailers will have to program their cash registers to flag certain products to deny food stamp purchases.
