San Rafael, CA-based Byte Foods has raised $5.5 million in seed funding to expand its smart vending machines which offer nutritious foods and beverages to consumers in the area, reports Tech Crunch. The machines feature a digital menu display where users can scroll through for product information. It also allows the user to swipe his or her credit card to pay for items in the machine. Users have the ability to remove products from the machine, look at them, and return them to the machine. Items in the machine include fresh salads, burritos, kombucha and iced coffee among other things.
Byte CEO Megan Mokri told the source that she aims to have Byte vending machines cost less than traditional vending machines.
Byte Foods acquired Pantry Retail earlier this year.
