Research Suggests That Too Much Green Tea May Be Harmful

Dec. 15, 2015

There are many studies linking green tea to health benefits, but recent research has found that too much can actually be harmful. A recent study published in the Journal of Functional Foods found that excessive amounts of green tea impaired the reproductive function in fruit flies, according to Medical News Today.

The scientists exposed embryos and larvae of fruit flies—which are often used to study human disease— to varying doses of green tea, the source reports. The researchers found that 10 milligrams of green tea led to slower development of larvae and a reduction in the number and size of the offspring.

While the study did not reveal whether the drink has the same impact on humans, scientists are cautioning against consuming large amounts of green tea.
