Lovers of single-serve coffee pods have a compostable, plant-based mesh alternative as New England Coffee Co. has launched its BPI-certified commercially compostable pods. New England Coffee has replaced its single-serve plastic pods with the new design, developed by PurPod, which uses materials that reduce plastic waste.

All of the roaster’s single-serve flavors, including popular options like Breakfast Blend, Blueberry Cobbler, Carmel Macchiato and Hazelnut Crème, are packaged in the new pod format. The outer lid is made from commercially compostable materials; the upcycled ring is made with coffee bean skins — also known as chaff — and other compostable materials; and the mesh filter is constructed with plant-based materials.

“We are excited to announce that two of our major brand goals  — to continue to perfect our coffee’s taste while using eco-friendlier packaging, has meshed — literally — with the introduction of our mesh, compostable pods,” said Jim Kaloyanides, senior vice president and general manager of New England Coffee, in a release.

Kaloyanides is a member of the family that founded New England Coffee in 1916. New England Coffee is owned and operated by Reily Foods, a 5th-generation, family-owned company.
