This November, voters in San Francisco will consider a tax on sugar sweetened beverages, according to NACSOnline. The penny-per-ounce tax would be placed on soft drinks, sports drinks and bottled teas. Opponents believe the higher prices would hurt small businesses and lead to high costs on other products.
In 2014 San Francisco tried its hand at a soda tax, but the proposal failed to get enough votes.
Earlier this year Philadelphia successfully passed a similar measure that also included diet drinks; however, the American Beverage Association has filed a lawsuit to halt the law’s implementation.
