Philadelphia Takes One Step Closer To Soda Tax

June 10, 2016

A Philadelphia city council committee voted Wednesday to approve a 1.5 cents-per-ounce tax on sweetened beverages, according to NPR. The measure will go for a final vote, reportedly on June 16, and if approved, would make Philadelphia the first major U.S. city to have a tax on sugary beverages.

The estimated $91 million tax revenue over the next year would fund Philadelphia’s education programs, pay for park improvements and go into the city’s general fund, the source reports.
