The new year comes with new arrivals, and for Seattle, WA that means a new tax on beverages with sugar, according to the American Beverage Association. Seattle's city council passed a 1.75 per ounce tax that went into effect on January 1. This tax impacts all beverages with sugar, including sports drinks, juices, teas – even meal supplements like Ensure. There are some retailers who have posted signage around the tax. Some people are following the example of what those in other cities with beverage taxes do – and going to where there isn't a tax. However, one thing is clear: beverage taxes are putting a burden on the community.
