Congress, USDA Grant Hawaii, Puerto Rico Additional Aid To Combat Coffee Berry Borer

July 9, 2015

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Hawaii’s congressional delegation announced that an additional $1 million has been released to Hawaii and Puerto Rico to combat the coffee berry borer, reports West Hawaii Today. The money will be used to continue research into how the invasive beetles can be controlled and eradicated.

For the past several years the USDA has been funding the research to combat the coffee berry borer in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. In Dec. 2014, however, the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) confirmed the presence of the coffee berry borer on coffee farms owned by Dole Foods in Waialua, Oahu.

The coffee berry borer is an insect that lives and feeds on coffee berries.
