The Alliance for a Healthier Vermont is asking that an excise tax, a tax paid on a specific good, be put on sugar-sweetened beverages, reports Vermont Public Radio. Lawmakers didn’t opt for an excise tax during the last legislative session, instead adding sales tax to items like soda and candy. However, the advocates are still pushing for more because they believe an excise tax will change consumer behavior. They propose the excise tax be imposed on the distributor, then the product will already arrive at retailers with an increased price.
